In this land where the relationship between God and man is celebrated, the Domiani Monastery, is one of the most important religious monuments of the wider region with avaluable contribution to the Nation and Orthodoxy.
It is located on the east end of the village of Domiani in Evritania and consists of the Church, large above-ground cells, a large courtyard with cypress trees and the imposing, 18-metre high belfry.
…According to tradition, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found on the branches of a kermes oak (which is still found near the church to this day), as the point emitted light.
When the inhabitants of nearby Vracha learned about the miracle, they tried to take the icon, but no matter how many times they removed it, the picture was found again in the same place. In this way, the inhabitants of Domiani built the church of Panagia to house the icon.
The monastery is probably established in the 16th century. In the following years it was set on fire twice, once in 1611, because the monks participated in the revolutionary uprising of Dionysios Philosophos, and once again in 1770, in the Orlov revolt.
The Church is accessed through 3 low wooden doors. The north door is known as the “door of Karaiskakis” because he and other fighters used it to go in and out at the time of danger.
