Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration - Vracha

To the north of the village of Vracha, in the loving embrace of the oak trees stands the great historical Monastery and an important religious monument of Evritania, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. It had experienced great prosperity and played a key role during the Ottoman rule. It acquired great wealth and could be proud of its extensive library as well as the school it had.

During the revolution, it had been a refuge and stronghold and its name was associated with the action of Georgios Karaiskakis.

However, the years that followed brought about great damage. To this day, only the katholikon has been preserved from the buildings of the Monastery, featuring remarkable frescoes, the gilded carved wooden templon and beautiful portable icons. It is also said that the some of the church walls featured the signatures of important fighters of the revolution, along with that of Karaiskakis, which were covered with paint in the 1930s.

By decision of the Metropolitan of Karpenissi, Georgios, as of 2017 the Monastery turned into a nunnery and since then two nuns serve there. However, action has been taken to ensure the dawn of a new era for the Monastery and to build cells for nuns. The completion of the cells is a dream and a goal of many years and will breathe new life into the Monastery.
